Chapter 25: Overwhelming Obstacles: 1985—1988

My precious People, the hands that will touch you to anoint you, to bring you healing, will be My hands. My power will flow forth to correct the ills in your bodies and in your lives. Better than you yourselves, I know what your needs are, and I want you to know I will take care of them. I hold you always in the palm of My hand, but you must not doubt, you must trust at all times, never waver. Stand firm and know that I Am God All Powerful, and I will work in your lives.

About My Book

Working under the pen name, Ellen Chaksil, Helen Silvestri published her first book, With God There Is Hope: Hope for Humanity. She began receiving messages from God in 1978. She needed to share what she experienced with church officials. Her quest led her from her home in Northeast Pennsylvania to the Vatican.

After numerous attempts, she was able to make contact. In 1992, she met Pope John Paul II and in 1996 she received official recognition that he had read her letter detailing the prophecy she received from God.

She also contacted Boguslaw Lipinski, Ph.D of Harvard Medical School. He provided hypothetical proof of the concept that when people gather to pray, energy is emitted.

Now her goal is to help unite the world in prayer to generate the power great enough to forestall catastrophe and enable humanity's continued existence. She hopes her book will be an instrument to raise awareness of the power of prayer.

Charismatic Group 30th Anniversary

To mark 30 years of gathering as a faith community, the Our Lady of Fatima Charismatic Prayer Group is inviting all faithful to participate in an anniversary Mass of celebration on Wednesday, March 26, 2008, in St. Patrick's Chapel, Jackson St., Scranton, Pennsylvania.

The evening will begin with recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. Mass will follow at 7:30 p.m., celebrated by Father Richard Loch.

In January of 1978, many area parishioners participated in a Life in the Spirit seminar at the Our Lady of Fatima Renewal Center in Elmhurst, Pennsylvania. Upon the renewal center's relocation to Dalton, Pennsylvania, the prayer group continued to gather at Marywood College and Holy Cross Parish in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Today, the Charismatic group meets regularly at St. Patrick's Chapel.

The group is celebrating its 30th anniversary to recall that on each Wednesday during the past three decades they have gathered for prayer, fellowship and liturgy, offered by many guest priests of the Diocese of Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Throughout the past 30 years, Charismatic Life in the Spirit Seminars have been made available to all faithful in the Diocese.

Among World's Catholic Women
Silvestri Represents Diocese

Helen Silvestri of Peckville, Pennsylvania, well-known for her activism in Catholic Women's organizations in the Diocese of Scranton, represented the Scranton Diocesan Council of Catholic Women at the recent assembly in Arlington, Va., sponsored by the National Council of Catholic Women. Mrs. Silvestri, pictured above (at right) with Karen Hurley, who was elected president of the World Union of Catholic Women Organizations, was among 800 Catholic women and priests from 45 countries who attended a huge gathering, participating in Masses, meetings and workshops. Founded in 1910, the WUCWO provides Catholic women with a forum to address church and social issues. The international Catholic women's organization is engaged in dialogue with the Vatican's Pontifical Councils, with many of its past presidents appointed to positions of importance in the church.

NCCW Province Director

Helen T. Silvestri has been elected director of the Philadelphia Province of the National Council of Catholic Women.

The province includes the dioceses of Scranton, Greensburg, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Buffalo, N.Y.

The NCCW is engaged in a variety of ministries, in particular those that respond to Catholic social teachings promulgated by the U.S. bishops. These include the life and dignity of the human person; the well-being of the family; equal access to food, shelter, health care, education and employment; the needs of the poor; workers' rights; solidarity with people throughout the world; and care for the environment.

NCCW members lobby elected and government officials and coordinate numerous programs, in their own communities, nationally and worldwide, to promote these causes.

Mrs. Silvestri explained that every Catholic woman, by virtue of her Catholic identity, is automatically a member of NCCW. Affiliated members, who pay dues of $20 annually, become voting members of the organization and receive a newsletter every two months.

The new province director said her goals are to alert all women to the important work of NCCW and to encourage more to become affiliated members.

Mrs. Silvestri has been a leadership trainer for the NCCW Spirituality and Service Program presented in the United States. She is past diocesan and district president of the Council of Catholic Women, for which she served as Church Commission and Organization chairperson. She chairs the Diocesan Women's Commission, which acts as a liaison to the bishop on women's issues. She is the pastoral leader of Our Lady of Fatima Charismatic Prayer Group and serves on the Diocesan Board of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.

Mrs. Silvestri is involved in prison ministry, Life in the Spirit seminars, and the RCIA and RENEW programs. She was a participant in the recently completed RENEW 2000 faith sharing programs broadcast on CTV: Catholic Television.

She is a member of Holy Ghost/St. Patrick's/St. Michael's Parish in Olyphant, Pennsylvania where she serves as a Eucharistic Minister and lector, is president of the Confraternity of Christian Women and coordinator of RENEW, and is a member of the Parish and Finance councils.

Silvestri Named to National Catholic Women's Post

K. LaVerne Redden, president of the National Council of Catholic Women in Washington, D.C., has notified Helen Silvestri of Peckville, Pennsylvania of her acceptance into the NCCW national leadership training program.

The program, titled "NCCW Spirituality and Service: A Formation Program for Catholic Leaders for the 21st Century," will be prepared and offered to Catholic dioceses throughout the United States.

On Saturday, Feb. 17, Mrs. Silvestri will present the pilot program to the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women in the Diocese of Joliet, Ill.

A past president of the Scranton Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, Mrs. Silvestri currently serves on the DCCW Board as Church Commission Chairperson. She is also president of the diocesan Commission for Women, the liaison to Bishop James C. Timlin on women's issues, and serves as pastoral leader of Our Lady of Fatima Charismatic Prayer Group.

In addition, Mrs. Silvestri is an active member of St. Patrick's-Holy Ghost Parish in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, where she serves as president of the Confraternity of Christian Women, a board member of the Parish Council, coordinator for RENEW 2001, lector and eucharistic minister.

Charismatics Plan Prayer Breakfasts

All faithful of the Scranton Diocese are invited to attend a Prayer Breakfast sponsored by the Charismatic Prayer Groups in the Scranton zone.

Helen Silvestri will give the feature presentation titled "Jesus' Vision for the Third Millennium" as well as "The Palm Branch: Symbol of Victory."

President of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and a member of the diocesan Third Millennium Commission, Silvestri serves as pastoral leader of the Our Lady of Fatima Prayer Group.

Greensburg Speaker
Silvestri Convention Keynoter

Scranton Diocesan Council of Catholic Women President Helen Silvestri served as keynote speaker for the first session of the 20th biennial convention of the DCCW in the Diocese of Greensburg. During the fall gathering, which was themed "Sharing the Gifts of the Holy Spirit," Mrs. Silvestri focused on preparations for the third millennium. A member of Holy Ghost Church in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, she also serves on the Scranton Diocesan Committee in Preparation for the Jubilee Year 2000 and president of the diocesan Women's Commission. Charismatic Prayer Breakfast Set

All faithful are invited to attend a Charismatic Prayer Breakfast, sponsored by several Prayer Groups of the Diocesan Catholic Charismatic Renewal.

"God is Love" - based on Pope Benedict XVI's first encyclical - will be the theme of a presentation by Helen Silvestri, of Holy Ghost Parish, Olyphant, Pennsylvania, where she serves as president of the Confraternity of Christian Women.

Mrs. Silvestri is also pastoral leader of the Our Lady of Fatima Charismatic Prayer Group and is participating in the formation of a Spiritual Development Program for the National Council of Catholic Women.

A personal testimony and witness of her faith experience will be offered by Maggie Hughes, a member of St. Frances X. Cabrini Church, Carverton, Pennsylvania, and the Charismatic Prayer Group in Dallas, Pennsylvania.

Charismatics to Focus on the Rosary

All faithful of the diocese are invited to a attend a Charismatic Prayer Breakfast, sponsored by Scranton area prayer groups of the diocesan Catholic Charismatic Renewal.

During the breakfast program, a presentation focusing on Pope John Paul II's apostolic letter on "The Rosary of the Virgin Mary" will be given by Helen Silvestri.

A member of Holy Ghost/St. Patrick/St. Michael Parish, Olyphant, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Silvestri serves on the board of the National Council of Catholic Women and as chairperson for the Diocesan Women's Commission. She is also pastoral leader of the Our Lady of Fatima Prayer Group and serves on the Diocesan Charismatic Renewal Service Team.

A personal testimony of his faith experience will be offered by Karen Burkavage. A member of St. John the Evangelist Parish, Honesdale, Pennsylvania, where she serves as captain for its Eucharistic Chapel, Mrs. Burkavage also participates in the Sacred Heart Charismatic Prayer Group.

Senior Girls Set To Be Honored

The 25th annual Communion Breakfast sponsored by St. John's Altar and Rosary Society will be held at the Central House in Beach Lake, Pennsylvania following the 9 a.m. Mass at St. Mary Magdalen's Church. The senior girls of the parish will be the honored guests.

Mrs. Helen Silvestri, President of the Scranton Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, President of the Women's Commission which acts as a liaison to Bishop James C. Timlin on women's issues, Pastoral Leader of Our Lady of Fatima Charismatic Prayer Group and a member of the Diocesan Committee in preparation for the Third Millennium, will be the guest speaker.

Sugar Notch Christians

The Confraternity of Christian Mothers of Holy Family Church will observe the 50th anniversary of its founding with a golden jubilee celebration.

A Mass of Thanksgiving will be offered at 11 a.m. at Holy Family by Very Rev. John Terry, V.F., pastor and moderator of the parish Christian Mothers. An anniversary dinner will follow at 1 p.m. at Allanti's, Kingston, Pa.

Guest speaker during the dinner program will be Helen Silvestri, president of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and the Diocesan Commission for Women.

The Holy Family Christian Mothers was founded in the fall of 1948.

A personal testimony on her faith experience will be offered by Elaine Santarelli of Sacred Heart Parish, Peckville, Pennsylvania, where she serves as a eucharistic minister. She is also a member of the Divine Mercy Prayer Group in Jessup, Pennsylvania.

Charismatic Groups Plan Prayer Breakfast

The Scranton area prayer groups of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement of the diocese invite the public to attend a Prayer Breakfast.

A guest presentation, titled "God Challenges Us to Say Yes," will be given by Helen Silvestri, chairperson of the Diocesan Commission for Women and a leadership trainer in the National Council of Catholic Women.

She also serves as RENEW 2000 coordinator at her home parish of Holy Ghost/St. Patrick in Olyphant, Pennsylvania.
